Alleged Harassment of Manipuri Muslim Woman on Train Sparks Outrage in Barak Valley
A disturbing video circulating widely on social media has triggered outrage across the Barak Valley and neighbouring regions after it allegedly showed a Manipuri Muslim woman being harassed, humiliated, and physically assaulted inside a moving train by a group of individuals described by witnesses as having an extremist mentality.

The victim has been identified as Ms. Samsad Begum Choudhury, daughter of late police officer Mohammad Ali Choudhury and sister of BSF personnel Jamidul Haque Choudhury. She is reportedly a resident of Badripar Part V under the jurisdiction of Silchar Sadar Police Station in Assam’s Cachar district.

According to local accounts and information shared online, Ms. Choudhury has been working as a tailor in Dimapur, Nagaland, for nearly a decade. The incident allegedly took place last Saturday while she was travelling from Silchar Railway Station to Dimapur by train.

Reports claim that near the Pachgram area, a group of individuals confronted the woman inside the train compartment and subjected her to verbal abuse, intimidation, and physical harassment. Eyewitness allegations circulating on social media further state that one woman among the group introduced herself as the wife of the Officer-in-Charge of Rangirkhari Police Station. Several men allegedly joined in the abuse while passengers recorded portions of the incident on mobile phones.

The viral footage, which has now spread across multiple social media platforms, has intensified public anger and raised serious concerns over communal hostility, mob behaviour, and the safety of women travelling alone. Civil society voices and local residents have condemned the alleged attack, calling it “inhuman,” “deeply shameful,” and a serious violation of constitutional rights and human dignity.

Community members and activists in the Barak Valley have demanded an impartial investigation into the incident and immediate legal action against all those allegedly involved. Many have also questioned how such an incident could occur in a public space without timely intervention.

“This is not only an attack on one woman, but an attack on humanity and the rule of law,” said several social media users reacting to the incident. Others called for stronger protection for women passengers and stricter action against hate-driven violence.
Public appeals are now emerging from various quarters urging people across communities irrespective of religion, language, or ethnicity to stand together against violence and communal hatred. Citizens have emphasized that silence or inaction in such incidents could encourage further acts of intimidation and vigilantism in society.

As of now, there has been no officially confirmed detailed statement from railway authorities or law enforcement agencies regarding arrests or legal proceedings connected to the viral incident. However, demands for accountability continue to grow as the video gains wider attention online.

The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for safeguarding women’s dignity and ensuring that public transport remains safe and free from harassment, intimidation, and communal targeting in a democratic society governed by law.
