Manipur experienced two earthquakes in quick succession in the early hours of Wednesday, causing concern among residents.
The first and more significant tremor, measuring a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter Scale, struck Churachandpur district at approximately 1:54 AM Indian Standard Time (IST). According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake's epicenter was located at latitude 24.46 N and longitude 93.70 E, at a depth of 40 kilometers.
Just over 30 minutes later, at around 2:26 AM IST, a second earthquake of magnitude 2.5 jolted the Noney district. The NCS reported the epicenter of this smaller quake at latitude 24.53 N and longitude 93.50 E, with a depth of 25 kilometers.
While the 5.2 magnitude quake was felt across several parts of the region, including Meghalaya, triggering brief panic in areas like Shillong, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage from either tremor. Authorities are likely monitoring the situation, and further updates may follow as assessments are conducted. This incident serves as a reminder of the region's seismic vulnerability.
