World’s Tallest Railway Pier Bridge Completed in Manipur
Imphal, June 5, 2025

India has unveiled an engineering marvel with the completion of the world’s tallest railway pier bridge in Noney, Manipur. Standing at 141 meters, the Noney Bridge surpasses the previous record held by the 139-meter Mala-Rijeka viaduct in Montenegro.

This monumental structure is a key component of the 111-kilometer Jiribam-Imphal railway project, which aims to connect Imphal, the capital of Manipur, to the national rail network. The bridge spans the Ijai River in the hilly terrain of Noney district, featuring a total length of 703 meters. Its construction involved the use of hydraulic augers and the slip-form technique to erect the towering piers efficiently.

The Jiribam-Imphal railway line is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Jiribam and Imphal from over 10 hours by road to approximately 2.5 hours by train. The project, initiated in 2008 and declared a national project, is nearing completion, with the Noney Bridge marking a significant milestone in this endeavor.

The completion of the Noney Bridge not only showcases India's engineering capabilities but also promises to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the northeastern region.
