COVID-19 : SURGE IN SINGAPORE: MAY 2025
Singapore is experiencing a significant increase in COVID-19 cases, with the Ministry of Health (MOH) reporting over 25,900 cases during the week of May 5 to 11, 2024—a nearly 90% rise from the previous week. The average daily hospitalizations have increased to approximately 250, up from 181 the week before.
The predominant variants currently circulating are LF.7 and NB.1.8, both descendants of the JN.1 lineage. Collectively, these variants account for over two-thirds of locally sequenced cases.
Health authorities have advised the public to wear masks in crowded or indoor settings and to stay updated with vaccinations to mitigate the spread of the virus.
This resurgence is part of a broader trend across Southeast Asia, including countries like Thailand, Hong Kong, and China, where COVID-19 cases are rising due to factors such as waning immunity and the emergence of new variants.
Experts recommend that travellers exercise caution when planning visits to these regions, especially individuals at high risk, and adhere to health guidelines to minimize exposure.
