On Thursday, May 29, 2025, large-scale civil defence mock drills were set to be conducted in four Indian states bordering Pakistan: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir. These exercises aim to assess and enhance emergency preparedness in response to potential threats such as wars, missile attacks, and aerial strikes.
The drills follow India's recent 'Operation Sindoor', a military action undertaken in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. Despite a subsequent ceasefire agreement, tensions between India and Pakistan remain high, prompting these precautionary measures.
In addition to the border states, Haryana will conduct a state-wide civil defence exercise named “Operation Shield” on the same day, covering all 22 districts from 5 pm onwards. This initiative aims to bolster the state's emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
The mock drills are part of a broader strategy to normalize civil defence readiness in regions adjacent to the international border, reflecting a strategic shift towards routine preparedness activities in response to evolving security dynamics.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain alert and cooperate with local authorities during the drills. The exercises will involve various agencies, including local administration, police forces, medical teams, and other security personnel, to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of emergency response strategies.
These drills underscore the government's commitment to enhancing national security and ensuring the safety of its citizens amid ongoing regional tensions.
