India Reports 564 New COVID-19 Cases; Active Infections Rise to 4,866
New Delhi, June 5, 2025

India has reported 564 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of active infections to 4,866, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Kerala: 1,487 active cases
Delhi: 562 active cases
Maharashtra: 526 active cases
West Bengal: 538 active cases
Gujarat: 508 active cases
Karnataka: 436 active cases
Uttar Pradesh: 198 active cases
Rajasthan: 103 active cases

Seven COVID-19 related deaths were reported, including a five-month-old infant in Delhi. The other fatalities occurred in Maharashtra (3 deaths), Delhi (2 deaths), and Karnataka (2 deaths). The majority of the deceased were elderly individuals with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and pneumonia. Notably, one of the deceased was a five-month-old infant with pre-existing respiratory issues.

A total of 674 individuals have recovered from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. Health authorities continue to monitor trends in Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). Testing is advised for all hospitalized SARI patients and 5% of ILI cases. Positive SARI samples are forwarded for Whole Genome Sequencing via the Indian Council of Medical Research’s Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories network.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has urged the public to remain cautious but avoid panic. Preventive measures such as mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and seeking medical consultation for vulnerable individuals are emphasized. While the numbers remain relatively low compared to previous peaks, authorities remain on alert to prevent further spread and to protect high-risk populations.

Health experts warn that symptoms of the current COVID-19 wave—such as fever, fatigue, and respiratory distress—often resemble those of other seasonal viral infections, making early and accurate diagnosis crucial. Individuals experiencing acute respiratory symptoms are advised to self-monitor and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen. Public health experts emphasize the importance of vaccinations and recommend the resumption of mask usage, especially in high-risk areas, to curb transmission.

The Union Health Ministry continues to monitor the evolving situation closely and remains committed to safeguarding public health through proactive measures and clear communication.
