Imphal, May 12, 2025 — Manipur is grieving the tragic loss of one of its own, BSF Constable Deepak Chingakham, who was martyred in a fierce cross-border exchange of fire while stationed at the India-Pakistan border in the RS Pura sector on May 11, 2025. Deepak, a native of Manipur, was known for his unwavering courage and dedication to his duties, but it was in the line of duty that he made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

The news of his death sent shockwaves through his home state, plunging his family, friends, and the entire community into mourning. At just 25 years old, Deepak was a promising young soldier, having joined the Border Security Force (BSF) to serve the nation and safeguard the security of its borders. In a sudden and unexpected escalation along the international border, Pakistani forces initiated an attack on May 11. Amidst the sudden onslaught, Deepak bravely held his post, attempting to protect not just his comrades but also the security of the nation he swore to defend. Tragically, he was struck by bullets during the cross-border firing and succumbed to his injuries.

Deepak’s family in Imphal has been left shattered by his untimely death. His mother, Sobita Chingakham, unable to hold back her tears, spoke in an emotional statement to the press: "I am heartbroken. He was always so full of life, so eager to serve his country. To lose him like this... it feels like a part of me is gone forever." His father, Chingakham Devananda, a retired government employee, said with a pained expression: “Deepak was the pride of our family. We never expected this day would come so soon. He was everything to us. We are devastated, but we are also extremely proud of his service.”

Deepak’s younger sister, Monika Chingakham, also found it difficult to contain her emotions. “He was my protector, my role model. He made us proud with every step he took, and now he has left a void that can never be filled,” she said. The grief in their home was palpable, as the family members clung to each other, struggling to accept the tragic reality of their loss.

Deepak Chingakham’s life was one of dedication and commitment to his country. Hailing from a humble background, he grew up in the village of yairipok yambem, imphal east district manipur, nestled in the picturesque hills of Manipur. From an early age, Deepak displayed an innate sense of discipline, determination, and courage. Even as a child, he would often express his desire to serve the nation. His parents, though concerned for his safety, supported his decision to join the Border Security Force, understanding that it was his calling.

His training with the BSF was rigorous, but Deepak excelled. His peers recall him as someone who always led by example — whether it was in physical training or in his determination to excel in every task given to him. "Deepak was a true warrior," said his commanding officer in a heartfelt tribute. "He was one of the finest soldiers in our regiment. He always took pride in protecting his country, and his commitment never wavered. His sacrifice will be remembered for generations."

As news of his martyrdom spread, social media platforms were flooded with tributes from friends, colleagues, and people from all walks of life. "Our brave son, Constable Deepak Chingakham, has given his life for the safety of our nation. His sacrifice will always be remembered with honor and pride," posted former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on social media. The government of Manipur has announced that Deepak will be given state honors, and a memorial service will be held in his hometown to commemorate his life and ultimate sacrifice.

On May 13, the body of Constable Deepak Chingakham is expected to arrive in Imphal, where it will be received with full military honors. Local officials, along with members of the public, are expected to line the streets to pay their respects to the fallen soldier. The entire state is united in grief as they prepare to bid farewell to one of their finest sons.

State ministers have also expressed their heartfelt condolences to Deepak’s grieving family. "On behalf of the entire state, I offer my deepest condolences to the family of Constable Deepak. His sacrifice is an inspiration to all of us. We will always remember his bravery," said N. Biren Singh, the former Chief Minister of Manipur.

The funeral will be attended by several dignitaries, including senior officers from the BSF, the Indian Army, and representatives from the government of Manipur. In addition, numerous organizations and civil society groups in Manipur have extended their support to the Chingakham family, offering financial aid, shelter, and counseling during this difficult time.

While Manipur mourns, the tragedy also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by soldiers stationed along the borders. The situation remains volatile, and soldiers like Deepak are constantly exposed to risk, protecting the integrity of the nation.

Deepak’s death highlights the daily sacrifices made by the men and women of India’s armed forces, particularly in regions where tensions remain high. The ongoing struggle for peace, security, and national unity is lived every day by the soldiers at the borders. They face immense risks, knowing that at any moment, they might be called upon to lay down their lives.

The loss of Constable Deepak Chingakham, a true hero from Manipur, has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his family, the people of Manipur, and the entire nation. His ultimate sacrifice will be remembered as an act of courage and patriotism, reflecting the indomitable spirit of the soldiers who protect India’s borders. As his family prepares to say their final goodbyes, the state and the nation stand in solidarity, united in grief, but also in pride for his service to the country.

In the days to come, Manipur will continue to honor his memory, and his sacrifice will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew him. Constable Deepak Chingakham may have left this world too soon, but his legacy of bravery and selflessness will live on forever.
